Woodworking joints are one of the essential parts of a woodworking business. As this is the basic part, you have to learn, practice, and professionally use it in your woodworking projects. By learning wood joinery, you will be able to join woods in an effective way to create unique designs for your customers.
According to the professionals, attractive and unique-designs required difficult joints skills which is the choice of them. So before starting work you have to decide on what woodworking joints you are going to use in your project.
Types of Wood Joinery
There are different types of wood joints techniques use by the woodworking workers but you select one of the most suitable methods for your project. Check out the following tricks/techniques which you have to know about.
By this joint technique, you can join two work or wood pieces which were reduced to half of their thickness and they lap over each other. This technique is also called the overlapping woodworking technique. Yes, there are other alternatives to this technique that are available which works more beautifully and might be stronger but few of them match with the half-lap method for ease of construction. It might not be wrong if we consider it better than the basic butt joint.
This technique is very simple to adopt for the beginners but very weak for the woodworking project. In this technique, two pieces of wood or timber join together by their ends with the help of a nail, screw, or glue. As this is so weak method of joining wood pieces, it can be used only in the basic and simple tasks of woodworking projects like wall framing works, etc.
As compared to the other wood joinery techniques, this one is a modern but less common technique used by the professional workers because there are not as many places available where this type of joint can be effectively used. As its name shows, biscuits joints can be used with the pieces of wood that are in the shape of biscuits to create a lovely wood project for your clients, like an elegant tabletop, etc.
Mitered Butt Joint
A mitered butt joint is almost the same concept as the butt joint but if we compared the strength of both techniques then it has proved by the professional woodworkers that the mitered butt joint is reliable and stronger than the simple butt joint. This type of joint is also made of two pieces of wood but its end is cut at a 45o angle and join together with the help of glue, this is what makes it unique, pleasing to the eyes, and stronger than the butt joint.
Tongue and Groove Joint
In the tongue and groove joint technique two pieces of woods are joint together edge by edge. To apply this type of technique woodworker first made the one edge of the wood as a slot which runs down the whole length of wood or timber and a tongue fits into the slot. Woodworkers prefer this type of joint in their work because it’s easy to make as compared to those joints techniques which require skills, tools and machinery.
This is an amazing technique used by the woodworkers, in this bridle technique joints are related to mortise and tenon but they are different in size. This technique makes a strong bond due to the depth of a mortise and the length of the tenon.
Tenon is depending on the depth of the wood or timber it is being put into and mortise cuts the complete depth of the wood. This can make both pieces of wood to hold tightly and lock into each other. This technique can effectively use when you are looking to join different pieces of the frame that are in shape and you can easily unlock the frame from the joined pieces without sacrificing its integrity.
You can easily notice in woodworking tasks for its unique square-grooved slot on one of its boards in which another piece of board will be shaped. This technique is commonly used in most of the connecting plywood work especially while making cabinets.
It is one of the hardest joint recognized by the professional woodworkers, as its name suggests that it is consist of pins whose shape looks like dovetail which interlocks the two pieces of wood. It’s hardest to make but gives a beautiful and elegant look while using it in your wood working projects. To apply this technique, one should practice a lot on using a jig or hand cutting because unprofessional woodworkers cannot turn it into an elegant design.
This technique is almost similar to the butt joint technique but with the big difference of the ends of wood or timber which has a groove cut out of it for giving the best holding strength. With this extra strength, still this joint is easy to construct and as compared to the butt joint its appearance is more appealing and makes it suitable for cabinet or carpentry work.
This woodworking technique is very attractive and strong if it is constructed well. Dowel design works more effectively and increasing the holding power of the weaker timber or woodwork joints. In this type of joint, a small piece of dowl makes it stronger and secure. To make a perfect dowl, a special measuring tools are used in its making. The dowel over screw technique makes the joints much stronger and convert it into an appealing feature.
Box joint technique is used by the woodworker when they are not finding a way of using the other joints practically. This type of joint technique is also be known as a good alternate of the dovetail joint technique. By this joinery, you can easily make a joint with the help of a table saw or a jib but it doesn’t give you the mechanical strength like the dovetail’s technique.
